Gold vs. Currency

National currencies have come and gone throughout history, but the stability of gold has remained intact. Gold is an asset that is not dependent upon any government or corporation’s promise to repay. It is not directly impacted by the economic policies of any individual country. For these reasons, central banks, governments, and other official institutions hold one quarter of all the gold in existence. There is nothing to indicate that gold’s reliability as a long-term store of value will change anytime soon.

Gold

Gold is a heavy metal and one of the rarest, most precious elements found on earth. Gold is produced by only one method, in the intense heat created by the massive explosions of super novas. Gold travels through space in dust clouds until it collects with other elements in the formation of planets and other astral bodies, where it can typically be found deep underground.

Silver

Silver has long been valued as a precious metal, and it is used as an investment, to make jewelry, high-value tableware and currency coins and bars. Silver has a brilliant white metallic luster that can take a high degree of polish, and has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals, even higher than copper, but its greater cost has prevented it from being widely used (except during times of war).

Platinum

One of the rarest of all metals, platinum is silvery-white and lustrous. Its name comes from the Spanish term platina, which is literally translated into "little silver". Platinum was first used by pre-Columbian Americans near modern-day Ecuador, where it is was later discovered by Europeans. Platinum is so rare that it is found at a concentration of only 0.005 ppm in the Earth's crust.

Palladium

Palladium was first identified as a "noble" metal by a British geologist in 1802, and was named after the asteroid Pallas, which had been discovered two years earlier. Along with its use as an investment vehicle, palladium has been used as a precious metal in jewelry since 1939, as an alternative to platinum for making white gold. Today, Russia is the world'd largest producer of palladium.

U.S. Mint Gold Coins and Coin Sets

The United States Mint was created by Congress in 1792, and is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage. The United States Mint also produces numismatic products including proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins. The United States Mint's numismatic programs are self-sustaining and operate at no cost to the taxpayer. Most notably, the United States Mint also maintains physical custody and protection of the Nation's gold and silver assets.

International Gold Coins

Almost every country in the world produces its own gold bullion coin. Each coin is legal tender and is therefore guaranteed by its country of origin. Gold bullion coins represent the acquisition of pure gold, and include the Krugerrand, Chinese Panda, Canadian Gold Leaf and other popular gold coins.

American Buffalo

American Buffalo Gold Coin
American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins are the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States Mint. These $50 gold coins are available to members of the public seeking a simple and tangible means to own and invest in 24-karat gold in the form of legal tender coins whose content and purity is guaranteed by the United States Government.

Krugerrand

South African Krugerrand Gold Coin
The Krugerrand is a South African gold coin, first minted in 1967. The coin, produced by the South African Mint, has proven to be highly popular and by 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market. The name itself is a compound of "Kruger" (the man depicted on the obverse) and "rand", the South African unit of currency.

Chinese Panda

Chinese Panda Gold Coin
The Chinese Gold Panda is a series of gold bullion coins issued by the People's Republic of China. The official mint of the People's Republic of China introduced the Panda gold bullion coins in 1982. The panda design changes every year (with a single exception) and the gold Panda coins come in different sizes and denominations, ranging from 1/20 troy oz. to 1 troy oz. (and larger ones as well).

Certified Gold Coins

Certified gold coins serve important roles in any diversified portfolio. Adding certified gold to your strategy can help provide growth, stability, protection, and privacy. There are vital differences between owning certified gold and gold bullion. As a general rule, certified gold coins are the gold coins minted prior to 1933, and gold bullion coins are the gold coins minted after 1933. Perhaps most importantly, the United States government has the ability to confiscate gold bullion, but not certified gold coins. Because of its limited mintage, certified gold is exempt from confiscation as stated in Executive Order 6102, which was issued by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
